Melamine Contaminated Food List

For all items on this page: Please do NOT be alarmed if a familiar brand of food is on this list, because it is unlikely to be still contaminated at this point. I am keeping this list up for references and because there is no guarantee all retail outlets will have cleared 100% of their old contaminated supplies. Just watch out for some of the products with lengthy expiration dates, or if it is sitting in a dusty corner of an old convenience store.

This is the most comprehensive list of Melamine contaminated food currently available, make sure you’re not eating any of this stuff.  Note: I’ve included everything in a global list, as the product ingredients may come from anywhere due to possible product mislabeling.

UPDATE: January 22, 2009

The verdict is in, death penalties for the 2 men responsible for the Melamine scandal, and life imprisonment for others. I’ve always been unsure about the death penalty because nothing good is accomplished through vengeance. I’d rather they be put on 100,000 hours of public service or something. Here’s an excerpt of the news from Telegraph:

China yesterday handed down death sentences to two men accused of responsibility for the tainted milk scandal which killed at least six babies and sickened hundreds of thousands of others. The head of the country’s biggest milk powder company, Sanlu, was spared the death penalty but was sentenced to life in prison and fined more than £2 million.

The sentences are an indication of the embarrassment felt by the Communist Party’s senior leadership over the scandal, in which a poisonous chemical was added to milk supplies for months, if not years, without being detected.

UPDATE: November 27, 2008

In the United States, a single sample of infant formula tested positive for Melamine. The dosage is safely below the safety threshold at less than 250 parts per billion. Last month the FDA has set the threshold to be 2500 parts per billion for non-infant-formula foods. The source of this particular case of Melamine is not from China, but possibly from the local manufacturing process or can liners.

It is believed that low traces of Melamine can be found in many of the processed foods we consume. That can’t be too good for your health after a while right? Time to start up my own garden.

UPDATE: November 21, 2008

World/Sri Lanka: Fans of Edna Chocolates (company based in Columbo, Sri Lanka, with exports to China and the world), informed me of a recent high court decision to release all restrictions on Edna Chocolates. I did a little investigation and found that Edna Chocolates previously held media conferences in October, to proclaim their chocolates free of Melamine, even when lab tests showed otherwise. How typical to instantly deny all wrongdoings and sacrificing safety to preserve their public image and profits.

I have investigated several seemingly trustworthy sources regarding this recent claim, but I also contacted the Sri Lanka Ministry of Foreign Affairs directly to confirm it. Can’t blame me for being extra cautious with this, based on Edna Chocolate’s previous bogus media announcements. Will update as soon as I get a response. Here’s an excerpt from Columbo Page talking about the Nov 21 High Court decision:

Nov 21, Colombo: Consumer Affairs ministry in Sri Lanka says that the milk products gone for laboratory tests in Singapore are clear of melamine.

Officials of Ministry of Trade, Marketing Development, Co-operatives and Consumer Services today announced that they have tested 30 milk food products in Singapore after the Chinese tragedy few months ago.

All the 30 products tested are now being confirmed free of melamine in its content, the Ministry said.

Meanwhile Colombo High Court today ruled that Edna Chocolates do not contain Melamine following a report submitted to the Courts by the Health Ministry.

The Court lifted all restrictions imposed earlier on the production, distribution, and sale of Edna products.

UPDATE: November 18, 2008

U.S./Canada: Apparently some non-dairy coffee mixes from Korea contained milk and it is not listed as part of the ingredients. This is bad news for vegans or people with milk allergies, so be on the alert. And since the milk came from the Asia area, not sure if Melamine could be involved at this point, since it is not officially an ingredient of the product. What else sneaked by with milk as an unlisted ingredient? Here’s the full list:

UPDATE: November 11, 2008

India: Will this never end? Apparently massive amounts of Melamine contaminated milk products entered India recently, due to the demand for cheaper milk products from China. I guess you get what you pay for. And this is right after India banned milk product imports from China for 3 months back in September 2008, which was 2 months ago. Something doesn’t quite add up here…

Thailand: Apparently Thailand burned 33,000 melamine contaminated food items to show how serious they are with culling the problematic products. The problem is, since Melamine has 66% nitrogen in mass, and it releases Nitrogen when burned, it will also displace oxygen in the same place. I hope they weren’t just throwing all that stuff into the bonfire, because it’s going to kill more than a few brain cells.

Pet Food Scandal Reminder: Claim deadline: November 24th, 2008.

UPDATE: November 6, 2008

After a massive inspection of animal feed manufacturers, China’s Agricultural Ministry has confiscated and destroyed over 36 hundred tons of melamine-contaminated feed.

<sarcasm>Good thing everyone learned their lesson from the big pet food scandal before. </sarcasm>

Here’s another new recall headline or two. “Vietnam finds melamine in imported milk, cookies”. More items to add to the kill list.

It has already sickened more than 50,000 babies and even caused multiple deaths. Be aware of what you and your children are eating, especially with all those Halloween candies around. Officials are discovering more and more melamine contaminated foods on the international market. Whether you live near the majorly affected areas or not is irrelevant because of the global exports of many of the products.

Some products found in your local stores may not even be officially sanctioned to be imported, just to bypass local distribution restrictions and fees. Here’s a list of all the melamine recalled or alerted items I compiled from various sources on the internet.

What is Melamine?

Melamine is a chemical used in plastics and fertilizer production and is dangerous to humans. It can cause
kidney stones, death, and other ailments, this is the same industrial contaminant from China that poisoned and killed thousands of U.S. dogs and cats last year.

Dishonest suppliers in China used melamine to trick milk product protein testers after watering down the milk products. Because it mimics the effects of protein, melamine disguises the watering down of the product.

More than 53,000 babies became ill and even caused death for some.

Symptoms of Melamine Poisoning:
Irritability, blood in urine, little or no urine, signs of kidney infection, high blood pressure.

Detecting Melamine:
And in case you want to do a little scientific confirmation, here’s how to detect Melamine contamination in food and feed.

    Canada…

I purchase a generic line of products,(Master Choice),from a national grocery chain named Food Basics…Included is a coffee whitener that reads,”Product of USA” but the barcode number is 69200 24500,which means made in China,(692),please beware.

    • Margaret says:

      This is spooky.
3-4 years ago I consumed huge amounts of coffee whitener I purchased from Food Basics, also. I do not recall the name, it was their store brand (2.97 per container) and I asked one of my chemist friends, if she knows the ingredients of the coffee whitener… Then soon after that I developed very deep ridges on my right thumb nail. These are very pronounced ridges. I had no clue what brought them about.
Somebody said that they may indicate kidney problems…
Is it possible I purchased my kidney problem at Food Basics?!?

  2. rod says:

why doesnt the us sue them for damages…..the amount of us debt they are carrying ought to just about cover damages?

  3. Walking Turtle says:

    Re these products, a question:

    > DREYERS CAKE MIX
    > DREYERS CHOC CAKE ICE CREAM
    > DREYERS COOKIE & CREAM ICE CREAM
    > DREYERS MINT CHIP ICE CREAM
    > DREYERS ROCKY ROAD ICE CREAM
    > DREYERS STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM
    > DREYERS TOAST ALMOND ICE CREAM
    > DREYERS VANILLA ICE CREAM

Um, there is a nationally-distributed “Breyer’s All Natural” ice cream brand. “Dryer’s” I have not heard of before. (I work with groceries now and then.) So is “Dreyer’s” another, different, localized brand (seems unlikely in a global-econ sense), or is this name a mis-transcription? (The cake product’s presence on the list double-emphasizes the query.)

    • Bdave says:

Dreyers is a brand of ice cream. We have it here in Texas but I think they are based in the east.

    • Julie says:

Dreyer’s ice cream is sold as Edy’s on the East Coast. Dreyers is an old brand, based in Oakland, California (just across the Bay from San Francisco). As I understand it, when they expanded eastward and encountered Breyer’s, they changed the name to Edy’s to minimize confusion, but continued as Dreyer’s in California. Then, just a few years ago, Breyer’s expanded to the West Coast, nullifying the difference. At one time, Dreyer’s was definitely a premium brand, although I’m not convinced that it has remained so, and, sadly, the phrase “ice cream” has disappeared from most “Dreyer’s Grand” products.

I have never seen Dreyer’s cake mix, but they make a wide range of ice-cream type products. You can get more info here: http://www.dreyers.com

@ Rod: “why doesnt the us sue them for damages…..the amount of us debt they are carrying ought to just about cover damages?”

The USDC Jurisdiction withdrew from the World Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice first thing under GWBouche, back in 2000. Lotsa’ luck getting our standing-under-the-law back into order.

BTW: About that “Dreyers” ice cream on the list: Is that not really maybe “Breyer’s” (a nationally-distributed brand of “All Natural” product), or is “Dreyers” nobbut a local-region upstart knockoff on the (usedta’ still be good) Breyers corporate name?

One must ask these things, y’know. ‘S the rules.

  5. CreativeHerb says:

@Robbie: Thanks for the heads up. It’s quite disturbing how one shady milk manufacturer can cause such a global health threat. I hope we won’t have to eventually live off of processed pills like the Jetsons.

@rod: I’d rather they pay through a fast tracking of social responsibilities improvements and open up the media censorship more.

Economically, if they were to cancel the debt, it might cause quite a bit of unbalance, since China is already struggling to keep up with its explosive growth expectations and slowing export demands. This scandal certainly did not help them one bit. Talk about bad timing. As for suing the company behind it, I believe the manufacturing giant behind all of this, Sanlu, has dropped from $350 million to only $62 million in value now.

The crappy thing is, Sanlu is already set to resume production. Hope they do things right this time.

  6. CreativeHerb says:

@Walking Turtle: Thanks for the question, and I would be glad to clear that up. Here’s some info I dug up.

Breyers is sometimes confused with Dreyer’s (”Edy’s” in the Eastern United States), a Nestle brand, which has led to a popular misconception that it is an imitation or knock-off brand, or vice-versa.

Breyers Ice Cream is a brand of ice cream owned by Unilever.
Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream Holdings, Inc., a division of Nestlé.

And it is indeed Dreyer’s products that are recalled.

Breyers doesn’t appear to be involved in any Melamine recalls so far. From what I managed to dig up, the last big recall from Breyers was back in 1996. They had used peanuts in their pint sized products, which were not listed as part of their ingredients.

    Hope that clears things up!

  7. Walking Turtle says:

CreativeHerb: Thanks for your thoughtful clarification. Looks like Nestle is in the deep schmelly-brown end of things ‘way up past their corporate eyeballs, does it not?

The “Edy’s” brand is indeed sold in my locale. Um, one need not /necessarily/ presuppose that Edy’s and Dreyer’s be the same confection from the same Chinese producer, only packed in identically dimensioned cartons with Different Ink, now, need one?

Better safe than sorry on this one, I reckon. I think I shall just keep on making my own yogurt too. American handmade goods are still the best choice; always were in these parts to begin with.

Item: http://www.tinyurl.com/melamine-list-url is now operable and MUCH easier to just spit out across the corner convenience store’s counter than the blog’s as-issued url-string. (Quote it at all times with my blessing.) I think others will do well to keep that idea rolling, too, fwiw.

I’ve bookmarked and forwarded this blog’s URL (and the TinyURL’d version) to roughly a dozen loved ones and friends thus far. Thanks again.

    • CreativeHerb says:

@Walking Turtle: Thank you very much for the link luving. I completely agree with you about the more condensed URL, hence I changed my wordpress configuration to have only the postname after my domain name, without the dates. I do try to keep the URL string as concise as possible and hopefully the updated one will work well. Thanks again!

  9. Melissa says:

what about walmart non dairy creamer….is it safe? Great value is the brand name on the label made by walmart. Please advise. Thanks

    • CreativeHerb says:

Hi Melissa, I didn’t expect to find much about Great Value Walmart Non Diary Creamer, but I did.

Walmart’s Great Value Non Dairy Creamer is manufactured by Bay Valley Foods LLC. Reviews have stated that they taste stronger than other brands, so if you like a stronger taste then it might be for you.

The problem is, in October 2007, Walmart and Bay Valley Foods LLC was sued because their Great Value Non Diary Coffee Creamer was allegedly “impure, contaminated and contained impure matter.”
The victims who ingested the product suffered food poisoning, nervous system injury, emotional distress and internal system damage. They always overplay this of course, but that’s what they claimed.

So they do not have the best of reputation to start off with. One safe method is to read the bar code to try and figure out where the product originated from. But with every single product pulling their ingredients globally, that would be a difficult task at best. Hope this helps your purchase decision.

I am presently using daily..GREAT VALUE (walmart) brand Half&Half, barcode 6 05388 18716 1….does anyone know if this is tainted.

I think it is time to STOP the use of these “made in China” bargains. On corporate levels as well as individual consumers. One contaminant threat after another is obviously no bargain at all.

    Thanks for any information……..:)

  12. Anonymous says:

    You’re right, BJ.

The fact that it’s being tolerated at all is proof that the ones who rule and run the world are allowing it to continue. If they wanted it to stop, believe this, it would stop. So there ya go.

  13. Daria says:

The leading authorities of any nation who allow trade with nations such as China who have shown this much disregard for human life and animal life
are every bit as guilty of murder as the culprits who put this poison in the Chinese food chain to begin with.
To ALLOW products from a known murderous country is murder in itself.
So whoever is allowing this trade to continue does not like you, your family or your pets – and evidently wants you dead. There is no middle ground on a issue this serious. And if you’re dead, who’s going to prosecute the murderers? SOMEONE has to “ok” this garbage to get in the country and food chain.
Someone is paid a salary to oversee import/export and food regulations. They should be imprisoned along with their bosses and the original culprits.

    • CreativeHerb says:

Unfortunately there are many merchants who are blinded by the lure of money, selling out their fellow human beings in exchange for wealth. While regulations may help things on the surface, real change will only happen when we improve our fundamental moral values globally.

Singapore , Malaysia , and around there serve real nice , extremely white, sweetened liquid Coffee Whitener, in all the coffee shops. A very cheap product from China.
Believe I can thank that for my one year of suffering with Kidney Stones.
So it is not just baby’s that get kidney stones from Melamine , I think this is another effect that is covered up , as it gives the hospital’s a steady supply of customers .

What is the cost to test for Melamine ?
    Anyone know ?

I eventually passed the Kidney Stones using simple products from a Traditional Chinese Medicine shop. Have them as samples to test.

    • CreativeHerb says:

Hi Uni Verse, it depends on the medical coverage of your country or insurance. Since a testing for Melamine in the body basically amounts to testing for kidney stones, it is a good idea to go through your family doctor.

Here is a link to more information about kidney stones: http://www.urologychannel.com/kidneystones/diagnosis.shtml

update: It’s great to hear that you passed out the kidney stones without having to do surgery. It might still be a good idea to make sure it’s all clear later on too.

      CH

  16. Uni Verse says:

Believe I have found something out about Kidney Stones that the doctors doesn’t know or are reluctant to talk about. Also I have no family doctor , insurance or desire to have one. This Event happened when I was traveling . TCM , Traditional Chinese Medicine , is very big in that part of the world , and a friend told me about someone he knew that used a herbal TCM product to dissolve his stones. Cost $30 . This gave me the Idea to try something like that myself. There was two identical stones about the size and shape of a rat dropping. Came out about 10 months apart. Looked like they had just formed in the end of the Bladder.
Anyway The second one I used an Indian Ayurvedic preparation and it worked also in the same way.

  17. CreativeHerb says:

There has been some progress with more research into TCM or other “alternate” form of medication. Though there are many merchants who are taking the opportunity to sell fake miracle cures just by saying it is Traditional Chinese Medicine etc…

It sounds like it worked for you wonderfully though, and definitely much more cost effective than paying for tests and surgery.

To be fair though, taking anything into your body should be done with the utmost caution and research first. Because with Chinese Medicine, some of it has to be balanced carefully based on the elements of the individual. Similar to taking stomach protecting pills when ingesting other medication that may cause stress on your stomach.

I hope that there will be more budget spent on all forms of natural remedies, so that we can create a global medical system that is produced and affordable globally.

Your last comment is great. Look at the subject of Medicine in an open and unified way , using the techniques of modern technology to test all forms of traditional medicine in a free open manner.

But alas, Pharmaceutical economics is directed toward maximum profit , not maximum human benefit.

A note to remember here also is TCM and Ayurvedic medicine have been used on billions of people in China and India for over 2000 years , so it is not just the latest backyard concoction. China was doing Open Heart surgery using only acupuncture before 1965 . The patient is still awake and talking ! Meanwhile in America at that time the attitude was that acupunture was just more superstition & hokus pokus.
What I am suggesting here is , there might be much more treasure in there if you dig deep , as the eyes are just beginning to open in the ‘West’ at long last.
The integration you speak of is not going to happen if you wait for the Pharmaceutical company’s to take the lead , it must come from Informed People demanding it because they Know it makes Common Sense. Actually common sense is not the best word just yet, but lets hope is is the words to describe many things in the near future.

I completely agree with the merits and proven track record of TCM and Ayurvedic medicine. The only problem are the bad apples that are mixed in with them.

However, I remain pretty positive. As Earth’s natural resources twindle and drug resistance increases, there will be increasing profit in creating natural remedies. Just imagine that, human beings actually working together with the planet instead of gutting everything.

    Looking forward to that day.
